This program includes one in-person session every week and five homework assignments per month. It focuses on the fundamentals of tattooing: line work, shading, and color packing.

Duration: 4 months

Month 1: 

Drawing fundamentals, hygiene, tattoo tools, and supplies

Week One:

In-Person Session:

  • Learn freehand line drawing techniques

  • Practice drawing simple lines and shapes

  • Work on outlining live objects

Homework:

  • Practice drawing parallel lines on paper

  • Draw ten simple shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares

  • Outline three live objects such as a cup, a plant, or a shoe

  • Create one design inspired by your outlines

  • Freehand draw lines without rulers aiming for steady hands

Weeks Two to Four:

In-Person Session:

  • Focus on simple shading techniques

  • Learn how to copy and trace tattoo designs effectively

Homework:

  • Week Two: Practice basic shading on paper with pencils. Shade five different shapes

  • Week Three: Copy three tattoo designs by tracing, focusing on accuracy and detail

  • Week Four: Create your first small design combining lines and basic shading

Month 2:

Lining and shading techniques

Week One:

In-Person Session:

  • Introduction to tattoo tools and materials

  • Overview of different tattoo styles such as traditional, fine line, geometric, and script

Homework:

  • Research the tools and materials discussed in class. Write a summary of their functions

  • Draw two designs in each style introduced: traditional, fine line, geometric, and script

Week Two:

In-Person Session:

  • Practice simple line work on fake skin, focusing on hand movement control

Homework:

  • Practice drawing straight and curved lines on paper

  • Create five simple tattoo designs focusing on line work

  • Transfer two designs onto fake skin and practice line work

Week Three:

In-Person Session:

  • Copy tattoo designs onto fake skin, focusing on perfecting line work

Homework:

  • Trace three detailed tattoo designs on paper, focusing on precision

  • Copy two of these designs onto fake skin, focusing on achieving clean lines

Week Four:

In-Person Session:

  • Practice different line weights and styles on fake skin, including traditional, fine line, geometric, script, and flash

Homework:

  • Create one design for each style practiced (traditional, fine line, geometric, script)

  • Transfer two of these designs onto fake skin and practice line work with varying weights

Month 3:

Working with color and tattooing live models

Week One:

In-Person Session:

  • Learn different shading techniques including whip shading, pepper shading, and soft shading

Homework:

  • Practice shading five different shapes such as spheres and cubes on paper

  • Experiment with different pencil grades to mimic shading techniques

Week Two:

In-Person Session:

  • Copy tattoo designs onto fake skin using various shading techniques

Homework:

  • Copy two detailed designs and shade them using different techniques on fake skin

  • Create a small tattoo design emphasizing shading

Week Three:

In-Person Session:

  • Practice realistic shading on fake skin, including gradients and depth

Homework:

  • Choose a photo of an object or face and practice realistic shading on paper

  • Create a realistic tattoo design and transfer it onto fake skin

Week Four:

In-Person Session:

  • Practice traditional shading techniques on fake skin

Homework:

  • Create a traditional tattoo design featuring bold outlines and shading

  • Practice transferring and shading the design on fake skin

Month 4:

Color Packing

Week One:

In-Person Session:

  • Learn solid color packing techniques on fake skin

Homework:

  • Practice packing solid color in small shapes on fake skin

  • Create a design with solid color and practice transferring it onto fake skin

Week Two:

In-Person Session:

  • Learn basic color blending techniques

Homework:

  • Blend two colors together on fake skin

  • Create a design with simple blended colors and practice tattooing it on fake skin

Week Three:

In-Person Session:

  • Practice small color tattoo designs on fake skin

Homework:

  • Create three small color tattoo designs

  • Transfer two of these designs onto fake skin and focus on color application

Week Four:

In-Person Session:

  • Complete a large color tattoo design on fake skin

Homework:

  • Design one large tattoo featuring bold outlines, shading, and color blending

  • Complete the tattoo on fake skin, focusing on precision and technique
